Dadfit

There are a few dads who I have been talking to, who have been talking about getting more fit.  I know that I have talked about this in the past and failed miserably, as I have not lost any weight, but we thought if we banded together we would be able to keep each other motivated to achieve our goals.

We have also started a blog that we will be posting weekly updates to help see what our progress is.  You will be able to see pictures of us basically like a before and after, and be able to see our goals and our reasons behind getting involved in this.  This is the first week for us to start this project and we are all excited to see where this will take us.

Here is my first post from this week…

——————————–

Alright I’ll go first here.  I’ll list of my goals.

  1. 1. Lose 20 pounds in 6 months
  2. 2. Lay off Soda/pop – starting gradually
  3. 3. Start eating healthier and make better snack choices
That will be a start for me. I am starting this challenge off at 205 pounds with the hopes that by the middle of June I will be down to 185lbs.  I will post pictures as soon as possible (I’m not avoiding it just have no way to take good pics of myself with out the wifey here).
I have a treadmill that has been sitting in the basement unused for about the last 6 months, so that is the main way that I plan to accomplish my weight goal.  I also hope that by doing this my son will see that being healthy is important and will follow in my footsteps.
I think a good idea if for all of us to list out what our goals are for #dadfit.  That way we know where each of us want to be so that we can help encourage each other along the way.

Why I Hate The Doctor!

I have always hated going to the doctor, ALWAYS.   My wife after some recent blood work was as far as calling up a doctor for me to go since some of my numbers were high.  But I called made an appointment and went.  Part of the reason was because of the chipmunk.  I want to be around during his life and show him how to ride a bike, throw a baseball, coach his baseball team, all the father things that I am supposed to do.

Well he did what ever he had to do.  I handed him my blood work numbers and he wanted to do more so that we got a more accurate count.  Now this is where I feel a small victory, my triglyceride count dropped over 200 points since October! That’s my small victory against the doctor but dispit the huge point drop the count was VERY high.  Everything else looked good, my cholestoral checked out great, glucose great so there wasn’t any pre-diabetic things to worry about.   Even with that he told me it is a low-fat, low-carb, high fiber diet. Oh and make sure I get 30 minutes of exercise a day! When he mentioned the exercise, I almost laughed and wanted to say “I have a 3 month old isn’t that enough?”  I’ve never been on a diet in my life, never worried about what I was eating (mainly because I wasn’t obese).

In some discussion with family I find out that fruit was high in carbs. (again i’ve never bothered to check the nutrition facts of things)  So I do alittle bit of research and find out that most fruit is high in carbs.  Well thanks mr. doctor, now your making resort to Broccoli for desert!  Wouldn’t fruit have alot of the good carbs and not the bad carbs like anything with enriched flour?

This is the reason why I hate going to the doctor… I’ve always looked at myself as having great health, nothing wrong with me with the exception of a alittle poundage that I need to lose.  To have someone tell me, “No Brandon your not as healthy as you thought” is almost like telling me that I’m going to get hit by a bus tomorrow.  I know that there are illnesses out there that are worse then just having extremely high triglyceride levels and that it isn’t a death sentence on anyone.  I can fix this,  the problem is that I know the doctor will tell me as soon as my levels are back in check that we need to work on something else and I’ll never be able to eat the whole burrito at chiptle ever again!  But I do want to be around for the chipmunk.  I mean who wouldn’t want to get healthy for their child and to set a good example for them, right?

I’ve been struggling looking for things to make that are fit all three categories of my diet.  I can either find one that is low-carb but it isn’t high in fiber or low-fat or vice versa. Ugh, what are your suggestions for this low-fat, low-carb, high fiber diet?
