Summer Travel

Well it is that time of year again! Vacation!!!

We are in the mid-planing stages of what will be our second family vacation.  This one will consist of Grandma, Aunt (who is coming home from Russia for a break this summer), my wife, the chipmunk, and me.

We’ve made the first plans, how we are getting there and where we are staying.   We’ve decided to travel via Amtrak.  This decision was made pretty easily, we all know how hard decisions can be when you involve 5 (ok 4 1/2 if you don’t count the chipmunk as a whole).   The thought process behind this was based on ease of travel.  It is a 5 hour train ride vs. a 4 what could turn into a 6 hour drive from hell.   The chipmunk will be 9 months at that time and will not want to be in a car seat for a long time.   We figured this way the chipmunk can get out and move around, no crawling aloud on the train, who knows what been on those floors right?   Plus, having ridden the train twice, I prefer this route if the train is even an option.

This will be an interesting start to our trip as the chipmunk was scared of a train that was passing by at a soccer game that mom took him to a while back.    Think about all the luggage too!  Amtrak will allow 3 items of luggage per person, and we won’t be paying for them either like an airplane.   This is where it could hurt us.   I don’t know how we are going to transport all of this!  It will be interesting to say the least.

Has anyone else ridden the train with a baby? Any suggestions?

  1. I rode the train between Anaheim and San Diego for last year’s San Diego Comic Con. Li’l D was about 9 months old at the time. I figured the motion would soothe him to sleep, but that didn’t end up being the case at all! Still, he had a lot more room to roam and the folks around us just loved his visiting with them. I’m actually really looking forward to taking the same trip next month . . . especially after last weekend’s flying ordeal!

  2. Amy Billinger

I look forward to this trip!! I can at least play with my nephew during the trip! The last and only train I have been on was from St. Petersburg to Moscow, Russia. There are three different forms of travel on these trains, and I took the cheapest one. This means that there are no doors on the whole cart. About 40 people are stuck for 9 hours overnight with beds that have about 3 feet between the one above it. People are constantly walking around you going to the bathroom and such. Needless to say, it smells and is not the most comfortable. On my return trip, I had a top bed so all I could do the entire trip was lay there without moving. I think it can only go up from here.

    • Then this is going to be first class for you! We will have nice cushioned seats we will be able to move to a cafe car. Yeah this train ride will be much different.
