AAP Updates Recommendation on Car Seats

AAP Updates Recommendation on Car Seats

To many this is already old news but having heard this, I then was listening to a DadLab’s Live Show (I don’t recommend watching the whole hour because it is broken into two video’s and there is talk about dads with children in the bathroom telling poo stories to their toddlers! Actually quite entertaining)  about these recommendations and decided that maybe I should look into these alittle bit more and come up with my own thoughts.

In a new policy published in the April 2011 issue of Pediatrics (published online March 21), the AAP advises parents to keep their toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. It also advises that most children will need to ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until they have reached 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years of age.

First, I agree with the last part of the recommendations that children should use a booster seat until age of 12.  Secondly, the rear facing until age 2 could pose a potential problem for some parents. I’m looking at William and realizing that he is probably going to be a tall skinny white guy! That being said he will probably be kicking the back seat by a year old.  Wouldn’t that cause a bigger problem by almost breaking his legs if you are in an accident?

New research has found children are safer in rear-facing car seats. A 2007 study in the journal Injury Prevention showed that children under age 2 are 75 percent less likely to die or be severely injured in a crash if they are riding rear-facing.

Instead of saying an age wouldn’t it be smart to just have a size recommendation.  Sure this is just recommendations and I’m of the mindset that parents know their children better then the AAP.   My wife and I have talked about it and we have decided that once William turns one year old we will decide then whether or not we feel that it is safe enough to put him in a front facing car seat or not.
